We were expecting foals quite late this year, going on well into June, but Lecon Benefique (Beneficial x Lessons Lass) had other ideas and on 21st May she produced a beautiful filly foal by Kayf Tara, her first filly and a definite keeper!!

Jack Hobbs Filly - 2019

2 down and one to go and on Bank Holiday Monday, 27th May, Kassis (Kalanisi x Gastina) decided she would foal down out in the field, mid morning, as it was such a nice day! She gave us a beautiful, almost black, filly by Jack Hobbs. One year to the day of the birth of her first foal by Mount Nelson!

Later in June, it was the time for the Store Sales in Ireland and Lecon Benefique's first foal by Sholokhov was entered in the Tattersalls Derby Sale Catalogue on the second day.  I flew out on Wednesday 26th in the afternoon to watch him go through on the Thursday.  He was finally knocked down to Oliver Sherwood, who bought him for a new owner to his yard in Lambourn.  We will be eagerly following his progress on the track.

She will stay with him for a month or so and then move on to Jamie Snowden's Folly House in Lambourn to start her racing career.

With thanks once again to Jessica Joubert for the fabulous photos

At the end of September our two weaned boys left us and embarked on the journey to Ballincurrig House Stud to begin their preparation for the Sales in Ireland.   Louis (Kayf Tara x Lecon Benefique) was entered in the Tattersalls November N.H. Sale and George (Mount Nelson x Kassis) has been entered for the Goffs Ireland Sale in December.

Time for the Tattersalls November N.H. Sales came and we flew out to Dublin on Tuesday 13th, Louis was in the catalogue for Wednesday 14th, Lot 911.
Sarah Rohan was his handler for the day of the sale and she said it had been very busy with people wanting to see him before he went into the sales ring, which was encouraging. He was due to go into the sales ring early afternoon.

Bidding was quite brisk, as Kayf Tara's colts were proving popular at this sale and Louis was finally knocked down to Richard Frisby for the sum of 80,000 Euros!  To say we were delighted with this is an understatement!  This was a great result for us. Louis was joint 5th place (with 4 other Lots) in the Top Ten highest priced lots of the whole sale, shown on the chart below! A fantastic achievement for our small stud.

Tattersalls posted the following report on their website's 'live feed' after the sale:

"Lot 911:   A third lot this week sells for €80,000 – the Kayf Tara colt consigned by Ballincurrig House Stud and bred by Julie Thomas's British-based Broadwell Stud is bought for that amount by Richard Frisby.
The colt is the third foal out of the French Listed-placed mare Lecon Benefique, half-sister to Fairmead Princess, the dam of the Kayf Tara gelding Mozoltov, the Grade 1 Champion NH Flat race winner and Grade 2 winner over hurdles and fences.
Richard Frisby's son J. J. Frisby said: "We've been lucky with the sire before and this colt has a great walk. He is closely related to Mozoltov and he was our pick of today."

Successful consignor Thomas, who has two mares with another due to join the broodmare band this winter, said: "I bought her as a foal here, she went on to win over £60,000 in prize-money and her three foals have all sold well – the 2016 Sholokhov made €42,000 and last year's Telescope fetched €28,000. They are all the spit of their mother.
"Lecon Benefique is very special and she is back in-foal to Kayf Tara," added Thomas, whose Broadwell Stud is near Windsor in Britain. "

With thanks to Pat Healy for these lovely photos of Louis.

Riding high on the euphoria of this exciting sale for the stud we managed to secure the purchase of Lot 909, a very lovely filly by Yeats x En Vedette as a potential racing and future broodmare for us.

Earlier in September Early Morning Rain (Martaline x Rosewater) left Denis Leahy's  yard in Ireland, where she had been in pre-training, to go into training with Jamie Snowden at Folly House, Lambourn with a 50% lease to Heart Racing.  We are looking forward to her first appearance on the track very soon.  Photo below shows her early days at Folly House.
